Speaking Calgarian is tricky when you first start but fairly easy to catch onto.  The first thing you must understand is that we mainly come from a ranching and farming background.  When you throw in the oil and high finance part of Calgary, it gets pretty interesting.  However we all live by a code.  That code is what we call a cowboyism and it is as follows:                "Everyday above ground is a good day."      Simple, but to the point. Here are a few terms and words we use and just what they mean as well as a few explanations as to why we are what we are. "Howdy!" is  not a TV personality.   It simply means Hello. We apologize a lot because we are simply polite, we cant help it. Sorry! We like most people so if you are walking down the street and strangers smile and say "Hi!", no , you dont know them but if you need a friend they would be happy to help you out.  If they dont stop , they are imports and not native Calgarians. One key thing to learn is the word "Hey".  This is more Canadian, we spell it differently in Alberta , it is "Hay.  If someone says this to you, don't repeat yourself.   Just nod.  We are looking for the fact you understood what we just said. "Giddyup" and "Yippeekiakio" have seen a resurgence since Bruce Willis and the Die Hard movies to be certain.  These are words we use sparingly now, mainly when trying to make a point.  They have become too Hollywood for us. "Saddle Over!" means slide over.   No one is asking you to move a saddle. "Get out of dodge!" means "Run like hell, and don't look back". "Skidaddle!"  Not as serious as get out of dodge, just gotta move. "Son of a gun!"   That is an expression of shock and disbelief. "Root tuttin'ist" means "hell of a good time" or the best you can imagine.  If you are at a stampede breakfast and have just had beans, it could mean something entirely different.   "Get out of Dodge" might be the next thing you hear. "Coyote Bait".  This is not good.   Get out of Dodge. "Red Coat".  This would be an RCMP officer.   If you met him at a check stop you are now Coyote Bait "Pretty Little Filly."  This is not a horse.   Smile if a good looking cowboy just said it,  smile a lot. "He's a hand."  This means the person works at the ranch or farm.   Not the same as "Talk to the hand." "Salute the Red and White."   That would mean "Salute the Canadian Flag."   We don't get too carried away with this, not that we aren't patriotic, we just are Canadian.   Not much to add to that.  The leaf in the middle is not Cannibus, it is a maple leaf.  Really. "Vegetarian".    Someone from Toronto "Tuckered out"  Just tired, very very tired.
